Today we remember my husband's great-uncle, who served as an ambulance driver in WWI. Awarded the Belgian Croix de Guerre for the number of men he pulled off the field and got back to hospital alive, he did not speak of what he saw in those days.

And because I did promo, and it is #nationalcatday, here is my cat tax. Our wonderful Gimli, son of Miss Timmy. The only orange tabby in his litter, he's a bit of a chonk at 16 pounds, most of which is muscle.

Today begins the #TourdeCouch — oh, and that other tour in France. I’ll start with a memorial; we lost Keanu at the end of April, but you can tell from his attitude he was serious about his training for this event.

Treat for myself: two of these half-quart Staub cocettes arrived today. With the end of chemo drawing near, I’m looking forward to autumn and doing some cooking. These are the perfect size for individual servings, so I suspect they’ll see good use in colder days. She says on the first day of Summer.

Back in 2011, I decided to head down to the Kodak the day before the Oscars to photograph the final prep. Here’s some of my favorites from the over 200 I shot that day. And yes, that’s my foot on the Red Carpet, thanks to a security guard who pulled the barricade back so I could take the shot.
The then Kodak Theatre (now Dolby) in Hollywood, on February 26, 2011, the day before the Oscar broadcast. Next to the bleachers for the fans selected via an earlier lottery stands a tall Oscar statue, draped in clear plastic against the elements. The red carpet is covered in white plastic to it won’t be soiled before show time. Just inside the grand portico entrance to the Kodak Theatre (now Dolby) on Feburary 26, 2011, as technicians set up for the Oscar telecast the next day. There is camera and equipment everywhere, which people fussing about a pair of tall director’s chairs that will be used for interviews. A gold Oscar statue stands in the back, seemingly unimpressed by the activity around it. Inside the entrance portico to the Kodak Theatre (now Dolby) on February 26, 2011, leading to the grand staircase that heads up to the main theatre entrance. Techs are busy setting up cameras alongside the red carpet, which is covered in protective carpet. The background is cream marble hung with red drapes, the equipment separated from the red carpet by a serious a barriers. In the far left side of the picture, faintly visible is one of the pillars which will house the name of future best picture winners. These columns flank the staircase and have all the existing picture winner names, as well as space through 2071. Outside the Kodak Theatre (now Dolby) on February 26, 2011, the day before the Oscars. We are looking down at a red carpet covered with protective plastic against the elements and wear. The upper right corner shows a bit of the terrazzo of the entrance floor. A foot wearing a red sneaker is on the carpet. This is courtesy of a security guard who saw me taking phots and pulled the barricades back just enough so I could take this and cross “setting foot on the Oscar Red Carpet” off my bucket list.
