Things I couldn’t fit due to character limit: I’m sure there are earlier examples, this isn’t an exhaustive list, I’m no expert on the influences of these characters/races. Just the first things that came to mind.

Can catfolk be their own post-Tolkien western fantasy niche? Off the top of my head there’s Catra from She-Ra (1985), Mirri from MtG (1993), and the Khajiit were introduced in ES Arena (1994). And I’m sure there’s an argument to be made that these were all influence by Japanese pop culture.

I have a good friend who is on the Autism spectrum, who sees Nissa as neurodivergent and really feels represented by her. So for me, it’s Nissa 🌳🦌
