I created a R script to see how many times one of those words came up in my recent NSF grant submission. The answer was 355 (!) times. Laughing but crying. Mostly crying.

what terms other than “basic research” do folks like for their work that is not applied?
For me this usually refers to my research around family relationships and parenting as contextual influences on adolescent development. But none of my work is basic!
