What is the culture of communication?😀
Culture in communication encompasses the shared values, norms, symbols, and practices that influence how individuals interpret and convey messages. In essence, culture acts as a "code" through which people understand the world and interact with one another.

The CCCS conducted influential studies on youth subcultures, media audiences, and the dynamics of race, class, and gender in British society. The studies tried to analyze media representations and moral panics. The model elaborated offered a new framework for understanding media communication.

Myth: When the most simple level of signification is distorded to create an arbitrary cultural assumptions similar to the denotative signs. There are also interpreted by semyotics.

Connotation: implicid, subjective and social.

It appears in: adds, films, song... summing up it appears in our daily lives.
For example:
Some popular songs like 34+35 by Ariana Grande or Espresso
by Sabrina Carpenter 2024.

Add about cleaning gloves during Fanco's dictatorship.

To undestand better the relation between semiotics, laguage and structuralism we have done a really interesting exercise in groups.
My job has been try to correct the other members of the group and try to complete their explanations. I hope I have been helpful to my group mates jejejej

Todays we have learnt abaou Saussure and what he said about language and semiotics from a point of view of structuralism. So interesting!!!!

Sometimes we forget that an image is not the thing itself, but a representation...🧐

Today we learned that in order for us to read and understand the meaning behind many things, we need to have previous knowledge and recognition of CODES 🚻

Whether they are social, textual or interpretative.

There are CODES everywhere...

For us, the following images represent freedom:

1. The freedom to go wherever you want 🗺️

2. The freedom to say whatever you want 🗣️

3. The freedom to choose 💗

Regarding Limited effects theory two ways;

· The Individual Differences Perspective sees media´s power as shaped by personal factors such as intelligence and self-esteem.

· The Social Categories Model, views media´s power as limited by audience members´ associations and group affiliations.

Today in class we started with the UGT theory and Mass Society Theory, the idea that average people are helpless victims of powerful mass media defined the relationship between audiences and the media they consumed.
With time the Mass Society Theory has been replaced by the Limited effects theory

Third person effect:

Individuals think that mass media has more impact on other individuals than on themselves. Mostlly it allignes with a protective viewpoint towards other individuals, becouse of these they advocate for censorship to protect others.

Cultivation theory:

TV has long-lasting effects on peoples view on the world, by hearing the same thing over and over they asimilate what if being said on theTV and think that is the truth.

Example: if the TV is repeating that inmigrats are violent that message will be seen as the truth.
April 15, 2025 at 9:51 AM
The two-step flow theory:

It studies the influence that oppinion liders (people with folowers) in the audience. It states that the audience is not a mass of individuals but social grups with their own leaders.

For example:Kesha followers will hear her as Shakira followers will listen to Shakira.

Our group works on an Italian article about the situation of immigrants in Lampedusa and on "Valle de los Caidos". We understand the difference in the explanation: one article was in favor of immigration (idea of pity and compassion ), the other against, but they talk about the same situation. 👍👎

But what is framing?.
The word signifies "frame" or "picture", so framing effects tell us that depending on how data or information is presented or "framed" to us, our perception changes and, consequently, the decisions we make are modified.
During the lesson, we applied this concept concretely...

On April 8 we went to the Arboretum. It was a lovely lesson, entirely in nature, under the sunlight of a spring day. We made certain considerations about framing, and it was useful to do it interactively in groups. Every"team" has the task to find articles online and analyse the differences. 🌿🌲

Is so interes also, how the gatekeepers the media have changed the las decades. 50 years ago were the economical interests of a news paper or lobbys (like knowdays).
Today, who owns the algoritm have the power!!!! Like Musk and X😉
April 3, 2025 at 2:04 PM
Continuing with the agenda, there is a big question which involves this topic: who sets the agenda for media? Personally, I think that the compelling news events, but in the crucial moments and with the news that goes against the statu-quo, who sets the media is the economical interests.

Today in class we have continued woeking about the agenda-setting, in fact, we have learnt about the theory of McCombs and Shaw.
They told that the mass media´s don´t only put on the agenda specific issues, they also give to each topic a different importance, creating like a hierarchy of importance.
April 3, 2025 at 1:30 PM
After doing a little experiment, we were able to realize that traditional media is setting the agenda in a big way for international news.

Whereas, for national and regional news, we were not able to detect strong patterns.

"Agenda Setting"

It's the process by which certain issues are prioritized and brought to public attention, often through media, political institutions, or influential individuals.

It determines what topics people and policymakers focus on, shaping public discourse and decision-making.
