Making public transit free can be a popular and highly symbolic action, but I’ve been on the record for quite a while saying that it should be compared with the projected/expected effects of spending the same amount of public money on increasing frequency and other elements of improved service. 1/

I love this. A place for kids to play, combined with stormwater storage and flood prevention. Multifunctional infrastructure is being built with the climate crisis in mind. www.theguardian.com/environment/...

HOUSING THE HOMELESS SAVES MONEY IN FINLAND: “a recent study showed the savings in emergency healthcare, social services & the justice system totalled as much as €15,000 a year for every homeless person in properly supported housing.”

It works AND it saves money.

Dining sheds helped keep New York City restaurants afloat during the worst of the coronavirus pandemic. To some urbanists, they were a bold experiment in rethinking public space. To others, they were an eyesore. Now, new city rules are forcing their removal. nyti.ms/495r60U

IMPORTANT: NASA map shows temperatures of up to 160 degrees on Phoenix streets & sidewalks. All that unrelenting concrete and asphalt for cars. Not nearly enough trees. They start with ridiculous heat that’s only getting worse, & then make it much worse with bad design.

I was living in Sevilla when this happened. There was no biking culture (nor in Sevilla neither in Spain) & this was seen as a vanity project. The bike lanes and public bikes (Sevici) were IMMEDIATELY embraced and became a sign of identity of the city. A rare example of top-down urbanism that worked
Seville, Spain eliminated 5,000 car parking spaces and built an 80 km protected cycling network in just 18 months with 32 million €.

Result: An average 70,000 bike trips a day.

Leadership.
