They're quite common here and many bird watchers hardly notice them. It's a shame since they are quite lovely with a big personality.

I had no idea they stayed over winter. We have them in our Colorado back yard from July to the end of September most years. I remember reading that hummingbirds eat more insects in the Pacific Northwest.
