During massage school, we had to ask every client if they needed help getting on/off the table and undressed/dressed. After school I stopped asking, because it offended so many 'abled' people. It occurred to me when I was teaching that we ask everyone because it normalizes asking. So now I will.

Four blocks of text on blue to pink gradient: 'What to do if a healthcare practitioner is promoting hate or discrimination: Some healthcare practitioners, like massage therapists, physiotherapists, chiropractors and acupuncturists, are regulated and some are unregulated. But that doesn't matter. Regulated healthcare professionals are governed by a regulatory body called a "college", like The College of Physicians and Surgeons. UNregulated healthcare professionals are represented by a professional association and, in the absence of a college, these associations will take on some of the duties of a college.' None of these allow for activities that are deemed to be discriminatory, harmful, or prejudiced. Colleges and associations will have a complaints process where ANYONE can submit a complaint about a member if they think their behaviour is inappropriate or harmful. The process protects the reporter's identity, and will typically involve completing a form that you can find on the organizations website. In some cases, other healthcare practitioners are REQUIRED TO REPORT or they could be subject to disciplinary action related to professional misconduct. If you suspect that a healthcare practitioner is spreading hate, discrimination or prejudice and need some help navigating how to complete a formal complaint please reach out. Spread love. Hold people accountable.
