This week Paul Scholes shared his experiences of caring for his son alongside his professional role and it resonated with us. In our economy - that devalues and isolates care - the challenges he faced are shared by millions, but not everyone has the resources he has to fall back on.

Whether you’re up for the school run, taking Mum to a doctors appointment or helping a neighbour with their shopping, we all want to care and be cared for.

But in the economy we have millions who care are struggling to survive, left to worry about how to care for someone and look after themselves..

We need to stop talking about a housing ladder - it's bad for people and it's bad for policy!

Our latest episode of Words of Affirmation breaks it down - listen wherever you get your podcasts / linktr.ee/carefulleconomy

We've added unpaid labour to the mix and find that it would take unpaid carers 45 years to reach an income matching a FTSE 100 CEO in a single month.

These figures are staggering and show that across different relationships with work our economy exploits so many of us for individualised gain.

Today's research from the @highpaycentre.bsky.social reveals the stark inequalities within our economy.

They find that FTSE 100 company CEOs earn 106x more than their lowest paid employees meaning it would take employees almost 9 years to earn what their bosses earn in a single month...

A timely new episode of #WordsofAffirmation as the #SpendingReview is likely to be peppered with the phrase "hard working families". We get under the skin of this in this week's episode. Listen on all good podcast platforms.

...As a start we'd like to see...

✨ Radical reform to Carers Allowance to value care (and cancel unfair debts)
✨ Reversal of plans to cut PIP for the thousands who need it
✨Introduce a wealth tax to enable us to invest in our public services and infrastructure

What would you like to see happen?

Our co-founder Ruth is in LBC today sharing our thoughts on tomorrow's Spending Review and Carers Week. Moving towards a caring economy is urgent work and it could start tomorrow (call us optimists!)...

Patrick Butler in @theguardian.com previewing our 2nd Words of Affirmation podcast topic. Hard Working Families is a problematic phrase. Listen to our new podcast to hear why.

Liz Kendall says proposed PIP cuts will save the welfare state, but we think it's a sign it's already in trouble.

It's time to return to foundations that enable our systems of support to thrive; investment over cuts, support over conditionality.

What could a compassionate welfare state look like?

✨📣 We’re launching a new podcast ✨📣

The day to day language we use to talk about the economy upholds is unfair and unequal design. So we’re launching Words of Affirmation!

Each week we’ll demystify and dismantle the words affirming our economic model…
April 30, 2025 at 1:29 PM
And we’re launched!!

Thank you to everyone who joined us last night, now to get to work on a caring economy ✨✨✨

It's questions from the floor time - here's our beautiful floor...

Look at all those people who came to celebrate the chicest launch party *ever*. 💁‍♀️

Sneaky question from @wstronge.bsky.social - what work are you going to start on @ruthhannan.bsky.social @hannahwebster.bsky.social??

@ruthhannan.bsky.social tells us the *two things* Care Full will tackle:

1️⃣2️⃣

We've moved beyond rationality leading conversations says - @simonduffy.bsky.social. It's no longer enough to be right, having a good policy isn't enough. We need to tackle the forces at work that undermine the good ideas that should work.

"If you don't think care matters - maybe you're a man?" - Emily Kenway makes a compelling case for why care might be so overlooked by the powers that be.

This work is so needed, and the challenge to the prevailing system is vital.

Here we are, resplendent in red! @wstronge.bsky.social chairing the discussion as well.

Here we are, resplendent in red! Thanks to @wstronge.bsky.social for chairing as well!

One half of the dynamic Care Full duo absolutely rocking it.

@hannahwebster.bsky.social tells us how care has been consistently and purposefully forced out the political conversation, and the people who provide and receive that care left in poverty as a result.
March 26, 2025 at 6:24 PM
We're thanking all the generosity of friends and colleagues for their unpaid labour & those who've inspired us @emilykenway.bsky.social @simonduffy.bsky.social & @autonomy-institute.bsky.social #carefulleconomy

What’s up peeps, welcome to our big launch!! 🚀 🎉 The pink cava is flowing 🍾, the red uniform is on 💃 and @wstronge.bsky.social is kicking us off with an introduction to @autonomy-institute.bsky.social and their work on intersection between work & care.

📢 New analysis of cuts 📢

We estimate unpaid carers are at risk of losing between £1.2bn – £1.7bn in income as a direct result of changes to PIP eligibility announced this week.

The green paper fails to fully engage with the scale of its devastation with much of this on top of £5bn announced 🧵

A social security system fit for the 21st Century is one we invest in. But the changes proposed today will take vital income away from those who need it.

Government must be open to fairer approaches, starting with progressive taxation options many in Parliament and beyond are already calling for.
March 18, 2025 at 3:27 PM
On the back of #IWD we're reflecting on an occasion transitioning from socialist origins to a corporate entity. With the theme of 'accelerating action' can we afford to take such a politically neutral approach to the world we want to build?
