I learned a lot by just going onto Pokemon showdown and playing around with different teams and learning with a lot of trial and error. In terms of abilities and natures it kinda depends on the particular mon and what you want them to for your team.

I went into this game knowing literally nothing about it and I swear it was the most emotionally impactful ways I could have experienced it.
