A not insignificant number of gods have been elevated in pairs (1). Common wisdom would dictate that this is a strategic occurrence, meant to keep balance in the pantheon, or, to create a natural counterweight for the newly invested deities (2). However, the evidence for this theory is sorely lacking. There is little historical record of any invested pair acting against each other. On the contrary, such gods tend to work in close collaboration, with the most dramatic example, of course, being that of the Star and the Fury. There are well documented periods during which one or the other of this pair took over all responses to the prayers and pleas of both congregations (3, 4) as well as wide speculation that in one instance the Star fully pretended to be the Fury, though it is unclear whether this was intended as an attack or, possibly, as a prank (5). The argument against the pantheon acting deliberately to raise gods in pairs is much more straightforward. The pantheon is always in flux, with gods fading and rising like the cycle of the tides. There is no single permanent head, nor even a set group wielding consistent power through the years (6). Thus, there is no understandable mechanism by which the existing gods would come to a collective decision on elevation of new deities.
