Carbon Conversations

Tweets by Roger Gagne, in the Petro-State of Alberta. Founder of Climate Plan Alberta. My old hobby was advocating for a price on pollution via carbon tax. Because of both climate crisis and the accelerating energy transition, we've got to get off fossils.

Here in Calgary yesterday afternoon - November 6th - I saw a mosquito. Also, a man out in shorts, and another working outside in a T-shirt.
Donald, meanwhile, says climate change is a hoax. Right, Don.
16 hours later with my morning coffee, I look out to this.

What ever happened to that sign guy? Oh, he got a job!
Just over a month ago I got hired by one of Canada's biggest & most reputable solar firms. I go door to door finding homeowners who are interested in getting a free design of what solar power can do for them.
Signing is now on hold for a while.

Liquefied natural gas is needed for long distance transport. But here in Alberta, we produce all we need... if only we could use it.
There are three manufacturers supplying most of the world’s turbines for gas-fired power plants, and they're backlogged. By years.

Teacher's working conditions are student's learning conditions!! 30 and 40 kids per classroom is NUTS.
Why do private schools have 16 students per class, while public schools pack in 30+ kids per class? Hire more teachers, and pay them more! @daniellesmithab.bsky.social @albertateachers.bsky.social

4) An hour later, a driver shouted out "You're F-ing delusional, buddy!" 15 min later he walked back. Shouting & swearing, he told me he makes over $200K per year, and struggles to feed his two kids. Lifted his foot to show me a four inch hole in side of his shoe.
The happy photo was taken earlier.

2) Excursion #53 in Olds was good. Lots of people slowing down to check out my sign, a couple of people rolled down their window with a quick question, and a thumbs-up from a young guy driving by. Finally, Ian who farms west of the Town was very curious and stopped for a longer conversation.

1) Excursions #53 and #54; road trip! I first wanted to cycle this trip, but injured elbow wouldn't like it so I'd rent a car... and then my pal Peter loaned me his EV!
It was Monday. #54 was pretty stressful, then Red Deer was a waste of time; late in the day, foot traffic had all dried up. Darn.

Excursion #52, back at SAIT today talking with students in Carpentry, Electrical, Sheet Metal, HVAC, and something like 3D printing, but with metal.
Long conversations - sprinkled with disagreements - with Carter, Chris, Curtis, Ilyea & Jared. Students at SAIT are always ready to talk about energy!

Excursion #51 was on Tuesday, back downtown. Longest convo was with a heavy duty mechanic who moved here from Quebec in '76; he knows the risk of separating from Canada. Also he knew guys who worked in crews of 10-12 on drill rigs; now, he said those rigs run with TWO workers.

Great thread (again!) by @profkharrison.bsky.social . Important for Canada, even more important for us here in AB.
But how does this math change for our #FossilFuel exports in light of this summer's ruling from ICJ? @molszyns.bsky.social @iisd.org @aaroncosbey.bsky.social @juliedabrusin.bsky.social

Excursion #50 was on Wednesday, at UofC.
My longest convos were with an Enviro Sci student & Bodhi, a 20 year old from Jackson Hole Wyoming, in year 1 of physics. Bodhi LOVES natural gas, w/ nuclear coming close in 2nd place. Hard for him to accept they can't compete on cost or deployment w/ solar.

Excursion #49, on Saturday. A long conversation with Tanya and her partner, and then with Chee who is a researcher in oilsands reclamation. The one that surprised me, though, was the young woman - 19 or 20 I would guess - who is a huge fan of Pierre Poilievre, and of oil & gas.

How confident are you in the value of your product if you have to force people at gunpoint to buy it?
This strategy is eventually going to backfire on Trump, but in the meantime it will be expensive and cause enormous suffering.

Unlike renewable energy developers, oil & gas companies don't need to post security deposits, nor do they have timelines for their site cleanup. Albertans must demand better enforcement from the Gov't and the energy regulator.

Excursion #48 yesterday. My buddy Jim joined me again, missed the photo. Stayed a bit long, got a nice sunburn on my arms and legs. Lots of thumbs-up though, and good conversations with a retired wheat broker, a lovely woman shopping with her mother, + a family who recently immigrated from Korea.
