Our new paper is featured on the cover of the latest issue of Geobiology. The paper describes microbial fabrics that have previously been misinterpreted as ancient sponge fossils. Very sorry to anyone who now has to update their early animal evolution powerpoints! 🧪⚒️

New paper: “you just look at rocks, and have beards” Perceptions of Geology From the United Kingdom: A Qualitative Analysis From an Online Survey.

We explore perceptions of geology from both 'Non-geologists' and 'Geologists', who describe the subject very differently! ⚒️🧪

The illustration is separated into three main sections: perceptions highlighted by the work, themes drawn from the data and conclusions. Perceptions - many perceptions highlighted that geology was just about describing and cataloguing rock, the poor diversity amongst geologists was highlighted, the discipline was described as being niche, and boring. Themes - "what is geology" - there is a struggle to define the discipline. "Geology is boring" there was an overwhelming number of instances that the subject was described as boring (mostly byn-geologists). "Employability and destructive practices" - this theme highlights that many only see outdoors, remote and often hydrocarbon linked jobs available for geologists, geologists themselves describe a huge variety of occupations and opportunities. "Diversity and Inclusivity" - the lack of diversity amongst geologists is highlighted as a barrier to entering the field. Conclusions - highlights storytelling, inclusivity, interdisciplinarity
