Athenril is actually part of a fairly widespread elven gang called the Hares, who operate in both the Marches and Ferelden. They do a lot of smuggling trade with dwarves, which has led to some of them painting the Casteless symbol on their faces as a show of kinship

Hawke was also a twin. Player choice doesn't determine Hawke's gender; it determines which one of the older twins survives to adulthood.

Rogue!Hawke is a hedgemage who has more power in Kirkwall, where the Veil is worn thin. That's why she can do stuff like teleport across the battlefield and make decoys of herself.

The reason Elves look so different in DA2 is because Varric thinks elves look weird.
