i think it's about the imagery cultivated by genres in their infancy. a lot of 70s metal was in love with fantasy literature and occult imagery, while early synthpop was all computer nerds

this isn't a hard and fast rule, but hearing "dance remix of the pirates of the carribean theme" invites a cringe reaction and I think that's interesting. there may be a kind of bouba/kiki thing about the texture of the sound but both synths and guitars are capable of warm and cold sounds

the weaponisation of disgust is used as a pretext to categorise people as undesirable and deny their rights. once it has been established that someone's sex life is grounds to curtail rights, expanding that circle of acceptable targets is easier than establishing that connection
