It's not that bad if you go in w/ a plan. The game gives you a ton of tools to make the game easier (overpowered builds, NPC/player summons, spirit ashes, etc) and a lot of people just don't to use them.
Ex: there's an item that stun locks the first main boss during phase 1 and I never see it used
