All in all, a SUPER cool thing to witness, and I highly recommend you train your ears to listen to the sounds of nature. You never know what you might experience!

Husband didn’t get any photos, but here’s a pretty cool video of one of the hawks! (9/9)

He answers the phone, tells me there are TWO hawks. I can’t see the second one from my vantage point. Both fly off shortly after he arrives.

He wanders into the trees and a couple squirrels take a moment to assess him for a potential threat before scurrying back up their trunks. (8/?)

Hawk does not appear to be hunting. Just glancing around/assessing. I tell husband to try to get some pictures of it so I can see it better (because it’s way too damn cold for me to join him outside). Just when he goes out, I see the hawk fly to a farther tree. I call husband to tell him. (7/?)

None of them seem to be the one sounding the alarm. We continue looking. I see a flurry of movement beyond the branches and identify the threat:

A gorgeous, huge red-tailed hawk.

It takes a minute for husband to see it as well. He eventually does, and I decide he needs to save the squirrels. (6/?)

Just beyond the window behind our bed is a little copse of trees and a vernal pond where we often see birds and squirrels. We hop up and open the blinds, curious what our furry neighbors are up in arms about. We spy several squirrels, all of them laser-focused in the same direction. (5/?)

After a minute, we wonder if it’s not actually a bird. He asks if I think it could be a squirrel. If it’s not a bird, it’s almost certainly a distressed mammal. I tell him I’m not sure. He looks up squirrel sounds anyway and finds the right one - a “warning of danger, but not imminent.” (4/?)

The man is a champion Googler. Can find almost any niche thing my little brain desires. I prod him with, “I cant figure out what kind of bird that is,” and then settle back into bed, knowing the ball is now in motion and if there is a record of that particular bird sound online, he’ll find it. I spent a few minutes trying to search the sound phonetically on my phone but quickly gave up and tried to sleep again as I have little patience for such things. But the call persisted and I knew it would haunt me if I didn’t figure it out, so I woke up my husband. (2/?)
