The only authenticity that really matters is our personal perception of authenticity. Do I really live out the values I proclaim to have or am I just a character? Or even are we all characters and none was ever truly authentic? Is authenticity fully becoming the stranger in your Self?

Again, none of this is to say these characters are inauthentic, but that they manifest the perception that people understand as such. For even the bad faith character could authentically believe their odd position, and the materialistic artist could love money. These binaries are not a full picture.

2) Inauthenticity as misunderstood values - in this example think of the artist that’s not in it for love of their craft but love of money. If the perception of such an individual is that they are truly in it for love of the art they may be seen as a sellout and inauthentic.

1) Inauthenticity as Bad Faith - in this example I am thinking of an individual that is proclaiming values that violate basic dignity. One might think “they cannot possibly believe this” and this deem them as not authentic.

Considering it further, I think that authenticity is not a quality one embodies, but a judgement we make in regards to how well someone represents the values they proclaim to have.

Perhaps someone that doesn’t believe they are living in accordance with their values would feel inauthentic. Someone that is behaving in such a way as to be liked by others could also be seen as such. Hypocrites, Nihilists, and Egoists may all suffer some inauthentic qualities. 🤔

If we rest in Bad Faith, we aren’t being authentic. Otherwise I struggle due to no-Self. This tension signals either everyone is authentic or it never existed in the first place.
