Turning to wealth, including superannuation and housing equity, it’s a different picture again.

Young households typically have around $238,000 in wealth, middle-aged households’ net wealth is typically $809,000, and retired households typically have $817,000. Again, the averages are much higher.

According to a Grattan Institute analysis based on 2020-21 tax office data, the typical - or median - Australian taxpayer made $53,032 a year, while the average was $70,458.

As this chart shows, federal spending as a proportion of GDP is about 1.5 to 2 percentage points higher than the average from 1975 to 2019. 

This clearly pre-dates, and persists with, the current government.
