Life on Cape Branwen. An island in between here and there. The best of all worlds.
Clem Cadwalleder, here. Nursing a dreadful root hangover, I am. Last night was wild. I've seen sights you people wouldn't believe. Haddock n chips on fire off Ron's shoulder. Sea bream covered in glitter. I'm posting about them here so they don't get lost in time like tears in the rain

I picked up a bounty of Saw Bird eggs in the chasm. Made lots of omelettes tonight. Some can hold their hallucinogenic omelettes better than others. While Clem is suffering the true heebee geebees, Jeff Chud is merely discovering a new skill of polyphonic whistling. Sounds like a flock of warblers

Evening! I'm back at the bistro, watching Clem Cadwalleder, his palms flat against the wall, concentrating very hard on staying upright. He's had one of my omelettes. He keeps screaming about how Pappy Lumps wants him to hold the toothy fruit.

Well, wish me luck! Down the steps I go. There's no reception down the chasm, so see you on the other side

You don't want to be climbing down the staircase if you've got even a sniff of root in your nostrils. It's scary enough without the hallucinations. I once saw a tree bear tear its own cheeks off after digging up a root

I have already collected a full wicker basket of Lantern Mushrooms from the shadowed fungus beds in the thickest part of the woods. They glow softly in the dark and taste like peppery ghosts. I can smell them now, in the air, on my fingers. I will look for the roots on the other side of the chasm

I'm sitting on a damp log catching my breath. It's a steep walk up to the woods and the chasm. I’ve brought my dog, Joey, as a precaution against any blemmyes who might get too close. We have to climb down the ancient stone staircase to get to the bird eggs. It's slippery so I have to be careful

Quiet again tonight. I need to shoosh up my menu. Maybe I'll post from my forage tomorrow. I'll go to the woods around Morgan's Chasm. Lots of bird eggs, and mushrooms, and hallucinogenic roots. Makes a smashing omelette

I learned to cook at my mam's knee. She would forage in the woods above the cliffs and we'd eat whatever she found that day. I take that spirit into my menu at the Happy Sospan. A favourite with the customers is my roast parsnip tart, with giant land bee honey. The secret ingredient is cocaine

Hi, Gladys Morgan, here. Owner, manager, head chef, and waitress of the Happy Sospan in Pen Mawr. It's quiet tonight. The only person in is Evan Puw, eating an eel mince moussaka and drinking my bathtub gin. That's the special tonight. Going to have it put it in sandwiches tomorrow

I ordered a Tahiti leather right hand facing power 2 seat 2 piece corner sofa from DFS last month and it arrived today. Absolute bugger to get up the ten storey spiral staircase, I can tell you.

Right now, I'm sitting in my big lighthouse keeper chair, reading the Usbourne Book of Cape Branwen Fauna and Flora. Fascinating, it is. The last few pages are left blank so you can fill it in when you find a new creature emerging from the Neverzone, or the white woods, or the big fissure.

On a clear day from up here, I can just about see to the Neverzone. It looks like how a migraine feels. At the very edge, the sea sort of curves up to join the sky. Frankly, it's very odd.

The lighthouse stands on the edge of the cliffs of Boch Gron hill. It is ever so tall, ten storeys high. The light has two settings, automatic and manual. I like to set it to manual and point it at islanders who annoy me, for a little treat, you know. Like Sauron from Lords of the Ring.

Denzil here. Lighthouse keeper. Sitting in my lamp room, watching Gwynedd bring her boat in with her three large sons. They never catch a bishop fish. They don't exist, you see. Gwynedd is quite mad. Her large sons keep the business afloat playing internet poker.

The closest we ever got to the Neverzone was last summer when we chased a hippocamp too far beyond the shoals for comfort and lost sight of land. The sea went sort of stiff and inky and the fish were lining up to gawp at us. Never going back there again

It was choppy out on the sea today. Very strong currents. And sultanas, too. No, I'm joking of course, but huge waves. No good for catching Bishop Fish. We were nearly forced into the neverzone where the edge is. Dangerous to go too close to the edge. You don't know what's on the other side, do you?

Hello. This is Gwynedd. I'm typing this while I navigate the shoals off Pwynt Dannedd in my fishing boat, so I have to careful. Don't tell the insurance company! Me and my three large sons are fishing for Bishop Fish to barter on the harbour front in Pen Mawr. Any we don't swap, we'll smoke in my WC

When I collect my bathtubs of land bee honey, I wheel it in to Pen Mawr and barter with the villagers for vittels, home brew gin, and poppers.

The giant land bees were agitated this morning. Their waggle dance twerking had attracted the attention of a couple of teenage blemmyes who had found their rhythms perfectly matched Groove is in the heart by DeeLite. They were playing it to the herd loudly on a bluetooth speaker.

Every morning, I take my bee dog, Hywel, up the two miles of track between my cottage and the forests on the lower slopes. We visit the traditional hive sites, and Hywel rounds up the fuzzy boyos to distract them while I fill my mobile bath tub with viscous gold!

The land bees are around the size of a capybara and are, of course, fully flightless. They have fearsome stings but rarely use them due to their fuzzy headed, stoner disposition. They live in small family units, with their grubs the size of Travelodge pillows

Myffanwy thought I might like to let people know about my work here. But it's quite hard to use a touchscreen phone when you're constantly smearing honey over every surface you touch.
September 18, 2023 at 4:04 PM
My name is Ifor, and I collect honey from the land bees in the high forests. I understand they can be a little unnerving if you're not used to them, but they're smashing chaps really, you see. Tremendous dancers.

The island's most celebrated photographer, Bryn Parchment, once shot a whole roll of 200 speed fujifilm trying to capture their image. Monopods and blemmyes were no problem. They gurn and goof for the camera. But every time a spirit was caught in the frame, a big Bryn thumb obscured the lens. Spooky
