Annexation? Before the 1988 trade agreement between the US and Canada, tariffs have been a flashpoint. In 1890, it was imagined by some that the McKinley bill (protective tariffs) would “starve Canada into annexation”. Instead, Canada sought closer ties with Europe.

Tariff provocation. 9 years of Liberal leadership under W.L.M. King ended and R.B. Bennett’s Conservatives won the 1930 election by focusing on nationalism and a strong response to US tariffs. Despite years of economic growth Liberal’s slow response to the Great Depression hampered their campaign.
