Pacific Islands Climate Action Network (PICAN)
@canpacificislands.bsky.social
Bringing together civil society actors across Pacific island countries to advocate for climate justice.
Ah yes, the universe reminding us, yet again, that the Pacific feels the impacts first. Even at COP. Even indoors. 🙃

Heavy rain hit #COP30 & the Moana Blue Pacific Pavilion flooded, forcing cancellations and a cordoned-off space… while everyone else carried on.

While #COP30 continues in Belém, PICAN is also in Vanuatu meeting with our Vanuatu node, VCAN, to support their work as they roll out their 2026–2028 Strategy.

Our commitment has always been global advocacy AND strengthened regional resilience.

Day 2 at #COP30 and climate obstruction is on full display. Some countries are challenging science itself, pushing “alternative facts” to weaken ambition.

But AOSIS, LDCs and the Pacific held firm: facts are not politics — data is survival. We won’t let delay win.

Day 1 at #COP30. Ten years since Paris, and once again, it’s the Small Islands leading the charge. As the world tracks toward 2.3–2.5°C, the Pacific and SIDS stand firm: 1.5°C isn’t ambition or target. It’s survival.

The Pacific is watching as Australia, and the worlds biggest producers, continue to profit from pollution while our islands fight to survive.
October 31, 2025 at 10:22 AM
A little closer to home and the report exposes that Australia’s 🇦🇺 gas & oil production surged 77% - the biggest relative increase among the top 15 producers - driven by a doubling of gas.
October 31, 2025 at 10:22 AM
The US 🇺🇸 drove 90% of the global increase in oil & gas extraction.

📈 +11 million barrels of oil equivalent per day from 2015 - 2024

💥 More than 5x as much as any other country
October 31, 2025 at 10:22 AM
Recent analysis by @oilchange.bsky.social shows that since the Paris Agreement was adopted in 2015, just four Global North countries derailed potential for global progress in phasing out oil & gas by collectively increasing their production by nearly 40 percent between 2015 and 2024.

The Pacific youth wave keeps rising 🌊

We’re thrilled to welcome Jo-Jikum from the Marshall Islands 🇲🇭 to the PICAN family, a youth-led movement using art, storytelling & community action to power climate justice across our Blue Pacific Continent.

COP30 is our chance to close the ambition gap and keep 1.5°C alive.

The Pacific Climate Justice Demands 2025 call for:
🌡️ A fossil fuel phaseout
💰 Reparative public finance
🌊 Action for climate, nature, and people

Justice must lead the way.

At #54PIFLM, PICAN was grateful to meet with the representatives of the Republic of the Marshall Islands Govt.

We look forward to supporting RMI’s priorities, especially in the science-policy space, to uplift frontline Pacific voices in global climate action.

Important directions for our region will be set in Honiara this week at #54PIFLM and civil society is here to ensure Pacific people shape the outcome.

Next week, the PRNGO Alliance is continuing its commitment to contribute meaningfully to regional governance and cooperation.

Preparations are underway for the #54PIFLM taking place next week here in the Hapi Isles 🇸🇧.

We are kindly being hosted by the Solomon Islands Climate Action Network-SICAN team and partnering with them to deliver a number of events throughout the week.

234 industry lobbyists are in Geneva for INC 5.2! And this is likely to be a highly conservative number.

What we’re seeing across the plastics, biodiversity, climate and science spaces is a widespread fossil capture of multilateralism.

Is Shell’s PR team now running COP30’s media?!!! 🤯

How can climate justice win when fossil fuel enablers hold the mic? Climate justice must not be allowed to be co-opted by the very industry behind our destruction!

Last week the world watched the #ClimateICJAO. The Pacific Youth that took the issue to the ICJ went from anxious to proud as the judges delivered real climate justice.

Sera Sefeti’s report captures every moment ➡️ www.theguardian.com/world/2025/j...

Today, the ICJ has confirmed what Pacific peoples have carried in story and struggle for generations. States and corporations have binding obligations to cut emissions, protect human rights guided by the principle of intergenerational equity, and repair the harm already done.

The path forward is clear.

Governments must act, civil society must keep the pressure, and the world must finally treat ocean justice as central to climate justice.

Let’s raise the tide 🌊
June 10, 2025 at 1:28 AM
The ocean isn’t siloed.

Climate talks, plastic pollution negotiations, and even the ICJ advisory opinion are deeply connected to the future of the ocean.
June 10, 2025 at 1:28 AM
It has become clear that while UNOC should centre science and frontline realities, there is an element of power at play.

Who decides what happens to our ocean, and who benefits from those decisions?
June 10, 2025 at 1:28 AM
From food systems to culture to sovereignty, Pacific survival depends on a healthy ocean.

And while we’re on the frontlines, the consequences are global.
June 10, 2025 at 1:28 AM
The science is clear. The ocean is reaching critical tipping points.

The time for vague commitments is over, this is the moment for decisive global action.
June 10, 2025 at 1:28 AM
Ever heard of UNOC? It’s where governments, experts, and civil society set the global agenda for ocean action.

Here’s what you need to know going into the 2025 conference in Nice.
June 10, 2025 at 1:28 AM
The ocean is under pressure — and decisions made in Nice next week will shape its future.

We break down what the UN Ocean Conference (UNOC) is, why it matters, and how it connects to climate and justice efforts across the globe. 🌊
