These are Matsutake mushrooms, prized for their aroma and flavour. They cannot be cultivated and grow only in remote mountain areas where they find the evergreen roots they need to grow. They are only available in certain stores in the fall. Reiko knows where those stores are.

Possibly the last gardenia of the year. It's been an epic year for flowers. Wonderful fragrance.

My wife is an extraordinary cook. In addition to being one of the few women trained as sushi chefs, she is also fluent in many other cuisines. Her latest creation is Basque Cheesecake. It's even better than it looks. I am so spoiled...

My wife Reiko is, among other things, a trained sushi chef. I am so spoiled. Not to mention the best wines in Canada from the legendary Okanagan region. At last count, they have 243 wineries.

Terrific display at the Celebration of Light fireworks show last night. Fort bien, Quebec!

I was privileged to watch this year's Celebration of Light, Vancouver's annual fireworks competition, from the roof of a friend's condo on English Bay. I used to photograph the fireworks obsessively until I realized I had hundreds of fireworks photos. Here is one from the archives.

#writingcommunity I mentioned a while back that I had mentored two high school students who wanted to publish a novel for their junior project. The novel is not only published, but scored a grade of 100 percent. That's Aina on the left, Kristina on the right, along with the proud mentor.

Our tradition on Sundays is for me to make brunch, starting with double Caesars. This is a veritable sockdolager of Caesars, almost a meal in itself.

Perfect weather for Canada Day! We celebrated with Caesars and brunch on the patio at the Lobby, then joined the mobs. That little dinghy behind Reiko is what we use to go out to the big one.
