They deserve a system that provides adequate treatment, ensures their wellbeing, and respects their dignity. A system that does not undermines the principles embodied in the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

The CCLA calls on Correctional Services Canada and the federal government to meaningfully take action in response to the OCI’s comprehensive recommendations. Individuals with mental health conditions in federal custody are some of the most vulnerable members of our society.

The OCI’s conclusion that it is “abundantly clear that CSC is fundamentally ill-equipped to provide long-term mental health care to individuals with serious mental illness” requires urgent attention and action.

As we observe this week, let us all strive towards advancing dignity, safety, and gender justice for all of us in Canada.

True gender equality requires us to recognize and advance the rights of all women, girls, Two-Spirit, trans, and non-binary people. Achieving this means addressing the intersecting barriers of sexism, transphobia, racism, ableism, and colonialism that continue to undermine equity for so many.
