I tried one on this summer. Patched up, took a 5 mile walk w the husband. Stopped at a Boots to by some blotting paper since meno-heat was in full flow. In the loo a half hour later I saw my sweaty face was making my patch flap open like a barn door. Neither husband nor Boots asst had said owt.

The few times I tried to make bagels, I freaked out about the dough, so Made Changes. The resulting bagels were…not bagels. I think I need to try again with the mental note not to freak out.

Community is absolutely essential when you’re an immigrant. Not enough people know what it’s like to struggle w another language and to then be flooded w relief when you can express yourself (Feelings! Opinions! Jokes!) in your own tongue.

My 14yo just came in bouncing with the news (‘I swear it’s true, look it up, look it up’). The agreement point we’ve landed on is that it everyone discussing it will at least enrage him.

The lesson (for me, certainly) is:
1) it’s easy to get caught up in ideas
2) writing (my writing) slips into ‘more and pretty words!’ v quickly
3) I’m both a swot and a masochist and every moment is an opportunity to re-learn this
