Adopting my son took a lot of steps and hours of training, but when it came to actually picking him up from the hospital the nurse spent 10 minutes showing us how to work the carseat, 5 minutes showing us how to feed and change the baby, and that was it. Absolutely wild.

For a long time I felt I should miss her. After all, she had a lot of good qualities. What I've settled on is looking at her through the same lens I use for a couple of my ex-romances: this person was so cool and interesting and funny! and hoo boy am I glad I'm not with them any more.

I'm sorry for your loss. ❤️ My mom's death was the end of her neglectful, toxic parenting, and was also the end of any possibility of something different. I find most of my grief isn't about missing her, but letting go of retroactively wishing for a relationship that we didn't have.
