I agree with Keith of course. But clearly they are NOT allowed to say them, judging from the rash of firings and suspensions without due process, including at public institutions where faculty free speech rights are protected from state impingement

The rampant violations of academic freedom and intrusions on extramural speech are escalating rapidly. Faculty members have the right to speak or write as citizens, free from institutional censorship or discipline. Expression of opinion as a citizen does not constitute grounds for dismissal.

Faculty and university senates are dying. At Campus Novel I try and make the case for why everyone—and not just faculty — should be freaking out
A Crossroads for Shared Governance
I used to like to point out that all top public universities have faculty or university senates. As of September 1, I can no longer make that claim. Over the summer, Texas passed SB 37, which dramati...

Time to recommit to academic freedom and the responsibilities and privileges that come with it. Which means it is time to remind ourselves what those are. Here is a contribution towards that shared endeavor.

Why is Trump going after US science?
What's the endgame for these attacks?

Vance, Rufo, Trump and Republican elites are attacking NIH and manipulating its grants in order to attack American universities.

Trump is attacking NIH because politicizing funding can force universities to become conservative thinktanks

Today, your colleague is not your rival. Your chair, dean, provost, and president are not your enemy. The enemy is those trying to destroy all we do in higher education. We will disagree on how to meet this moment, but we are in it together or we are not here at all four years from now.

As a Jewish faculty member, one of the most chilling aspects of this moment is the blatantly dishonest "fight against antisemitism" by the same people who still talk openly about "globalists" controlling the markets & media... and seeing how many Jewish colleagues refuse to see it for what it is.
