The desert began to reclaim what was once taken from it. The dunes advanced relentlessly, slowly covering the buildings and burying entire rooms under layers of sand. The old houses became ghostly scenes where doors creak in the wind and broken windows let sand filter in without resistance.

However, Kolmanskop's fate was sealed from the start. In 1928, richer diamond deposits were discovered at the mouth of the Orange River. Over the years, production in Kolmanskop drastically decreased, and by 1956, the city was completely abandoned.

The wealth in Kolmanskop was extraordinary. It is said that the diamonds were so abundant that miners could find them easily on the sand, picking them up with their bare hands under the moonlight.

The splendor of Kolmanskop was such that it had advanced infrastructure for its time. German-style houses were built, along with a school, a fully equipped hospital, a ballroom, a casino, a theater, and even an ice factory to combat the scorching desert heat.

At the beginning of the 20th century, in 1908, a railway worker named Zacharias Lewala found a diamond while cleaning the train tracks. Soon, rumors of diamonds in the desert sand spread quickly, attracting hundreds of fortune seekers who arrived hoping to get rich overnight.
