Alt explanation: he doesn’t have to think it’ll HELP Tesla to support it. It could just be something he’s willing to let go without a fight to save his powder for something he wants more

Imho it’s not about importing *vehicles* from China, just easier supply chain planning without trying to get batteries to qualify … and a little of the cost advantage confidence … and then on top of those, he genuinely believes autonomy is Tesla’s core value?
