Finally reading Alasdair Nairn's excellent "Engines that move markets".

In the snippet below about the collapse of Britain's railway boom, one could easily replace 'railway' with 'AI' and 'Hudson' with 'Altman'.

Just finished this excellent book by @drshashitharoor.bsky.social .

It very much drives home the message you can imagine from the title and subtitle, supported by ample factual references.

Just finished this book. Took ages to read as what it covers is so sad.

@jeffhorwitz.bsky.social tries to give the benefit of the doubt to Facebook/Meta's senior execs, but my inescapable conclusion is that they are absolutely amoral, but like to believe/pretend that they are society's saviours.

PET - Polyethylene terephthalate - is one of the the most commonly-used plastic polymers in the world.

It is also one of the most commonly discarded into the environment as waste - and tracked by wastebase.app

This video gives a short introduction to PET.

Took over 2 years, mainly due to having so many sad bits.

The quote starting "without exaggeration" pretty much sums up why we didn't use Blockchain for building any aspect of wastebase.org .

Unwaste.io published its monthly data report about #SingleUsePlastic and who produces it for July 2024

Although data is collected in real time, our data team typically spends a while validating and curating it

Visualization of supply-chain for a key component of automotive engines

Not surprisingly (as NAFTA launched in '94), includes all 3 of the major N. American economies

From environmental POV, lots of travelling

But to change this in a month? Or even a year?

Let's hope it now gets 15 years of overfunding. Somehow I am not hopeful.

Glued to the TV, as I suspect are many other people on #Mozambique, to watch the announcement of the Constitutional Council about the contested elections which took place in October.

Pretty much nailed it in one sentence.

@kagi.com doesn't quite claim it and at least clearly mentions Tumblr (i.e. not trustworthy) as a source.
