I definitely can see why this film got a 14-minute standing ovation at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival. Really good in set design, atmosphere and music. I’d posit it’s the best movie ever.

While some say that the whole Belle/Beast allegory was shoehorned into an otherwise irrelevant plot, I disagree. Like the Disney film characters they are named after, both Belle and the Beast are finding themselves again, Suzu after death of a parent, Kei, the Beast, to escape 6/8

attempts to find themselves and find out who the Dragon really is. 4/8

The music was what turned me on as I had heard the opening piece before, but it’s so much more than music for me. It’s well written and animated. 5/8

This allows her to grapple with her own depression, especially when a mysterious figure— known as the Dragon— crashes a concert that “U” and she put on. The movie then follows Belle and Suzu’s 3/8

It’s a charming slice-of-life anime movie about Suzu, an teenaged young lady slingshot to pop diva fame on the VR platform “U” overnight with her avatar, Bell, aka Belle. U isn’t like other platforms— it allows people to become their best self. 2/8
