My spouse builds instruments and I can only say what I have observed. A ukulele will make you smile whenever you pick it up, not so sure a banjo has that magic. It definitely can channel mournfulness. Depends on what you need to feel I suppose.

Jeez- Martha Wells' Murderbot and Mary Robinette Kowal's Lady Astronaut series come to mind immediately as options, as well as Tracy Deonn's Legendborn series. Lots of good reads for precocious readers.
