NOT A ROMANCE NOVELIST!!!

Following:
@theresthistory.bsky.social // @nybooks.com // @harpers.bsky.social

Reading and writing and (soon to be) lawyering.
I know the exploiting teen depression and China kowtowing etc. are the most serious allegations.

But wasn’t the chapter on Zuckerberg internalizing Trump’s victory, getting rebuffed by Obama—then deciding to **run for president** mind-blowing?!

Major “Foxcatcher” vibes.

Also, I’m reading your book “The Contrarian” and it’s fantastic. Great work! Super interesting, revelatory, well-written.

Not sure about this quote from the piece: “…but today’s congressional Republicans hardly resemble darlings of high finance…”

(Ds aren’t angels on the issue either, of course.)

But I guess that’s not your point. Tech barons will react regardless of policy fate. And “quietly flipping out” is funny!

Not being facetious, nor is it very important given what's now underway--but it sure looks like he was on Ketamine or some other narcotic.

In Ketamine Veritas?

For the record, I **can** imagine it. Just trying to be funny (re the JJ tweet) and not sure requiring an alternative design as an element is necessary/desirable... some products just shouldn't exist.

Also, props on Glannon guide Mr. Hasen. Like an actor with character range--not just election law!

Imagine thinking the third restatement is good.

Center for Media and Democracy and the org Documented have substantiated all this.

I think there’s a NYT article from like 2012 talking about “the Exxon bill” at ALEC, which is how ALEC employees spoke about their anti-disclosure of fracking fluid bill.

Now they’re more discreet. Same thing tho

Of funding. Liberal causes and donors are notoriously fickle and loathe to fund long term projects. There’s not Powell Memo equivalent on the left.

Unions, in contrast, have a pool of reliable funds yearly. They spend big on lobbying, state election spending etc. They’re real players.
December 6, 2024 at 3:19 PM
Certainly helps to have people. Especially for electoral ground game on elections (this is partially why ALEC/SPN’s move to push right-to-work in the Midwest in the early 2010s has been so devastating for Ds).

But in the end, IMO, it’s because unions have innately stable and significant sources 1/2

Last thing, @drustevenson.bsky.social :)

Very specific, curiously industry specific ALEC bills like that AI school bill which might concern you as a researcher of gun policy… are almost always drafted first by corps. Then given to state reps, who “introduce” them at ALEC meetings. A thin veneer.
December 6, 2024 at 3:14 PM
There are also America Votes tables—I think that what they’re called—that meet in states monthly, and attempt to coordinate on the left on lobbying and particularly electoral issues. (At least that’s what it was 10 yrs ago.) But again, the synergy is nothing like that created on the right.
December 6, 2024 at 3:09 PM
IMO, most powerful force for liberal lobbying is unions. Especially teacher unions like the NEA, who lobby on issues far beyond the educational scope… because they’re positioned to and have a conscious.

ALEC/Heritage/SPN/the entire network knows this and have targeted them since day 1.

Used to be called “ALYCE”, now called the “State Innovation Network.”

They do good policy work. But the key to ALEC’s power is in its infrastructure and corporate lobby networks, so replicating that is basically impossible.

Cernovich is no Kant.

I understand your concern, and I agree there are problems on the "left" with puritanical thinking on the issue.

But treating Cernovich as some thought leader regarding "how to think and have morals" is like asking Jeff Epstein for insights on massage therapy.
December 6, 2024 at 1:54 AM
This mofo (Cernovich) rose to prominence through misogyny, Pizzagate, Gamergate, racism, overall being a POS.

Elevating/engaging with him is heinous.
December 5, 2024 at 5:09 AM
If this isn’t a mistake or a hack of some kind and Ryan Grim is actually going down the damn hole of bullshit peddling — like Greenwald, Taibbi, etc. — it would be a true shame.

Good God is the entire world broken?
December 5, 2024 at 5:05 AM
Were you hacked? Or did you eat too strong an edible or something?

Philosophical and educational advice from this dude?!
December 5, 2024 at 4:55 AM
Wtf is this? Two tweets… so it’s not actually a joke?!

Here are quotes from Cernovich. Fuck that guy.

There’s some Chrome app that does a half-decent job at it. End up following some randos with same name but better than nothing.

Agreed Trump’s primary concern will be $$.

Seems like this a concern with how senate/house Rs want to govern—or not govern, as harnessing power has electoral consequences.

Maybe they’ll push a bill that gets rid of the bulk of ACA but leaves popular provisions like pre-existing conditions intact?
