2018's Johnny English is possibly still the worst film I have paid money to see at the cinema, truly awful (made worse by the collective comedic talent going to waste)

Top 5:
1) Flow
2) Ballad of Wallis Island
3) Sorry, Baby
4) Four Mothers
5) Mickey 17

If I'm allowed to cheat slightly London Film Festival viewings of No Other Choice and The Sound of Falling would slot in at 2 and 4.

Largely avoided total clangers this year but Parthenope was rubbish

Chitty being on means that everyone can quite rightly celebrate Dick van Dyke's 100th Birthday next week

Perhaps on the smaller side of what you could call a choir, but I'll always watch The Sound of Music

Only two words needed. Wrong. Trousers.

I'm counting myself lucky that I actually haven't even heard of any of these

I've still somehow never seen anything by Lynch, and Elephant Man feels like a good place to start?

Portrait of a Lady on Fire would be my pick, or A Matter of Life and Death if you want your ending less crushing.

Casablanca is my favourite film of all time, so its hard not to go for that. Everything just fizzes.

Mark will presumably pick Hearts of Darkness which I'll also try and catch

I will happily take anything by the magnificent Guillermo del Toro as twisted fairytales feel very much baked into anything he makes

Mine has been updated in the last 20 mins or so

Mine has recently appeared 🎉

I only appear to have access to yesterday's Take 2, with no sign of Take 1 (on Podcast Addict app on Android if that matters!)

I saw Transformers: This Time They're Dinosaurs in the cinema when it came out because I think it was raining and I had time to kill, and I remember it boring me even as a 15 year old, if slightly precocious, boy (which I don't think was a great sign).

I'll seek out anything with Kathy Burke in a dramatic role, so Tinker Tailor for me!
March 31, 2025 at 9:21 PM
Recently bought a blu-ray of Silent Running, so might give that a go!

I ordered from them a couple of hours ago, but does seem to be out of stock now (a lovely bookshop though)

Del Toro's Pinocchio, puts the darkness back in (although Disney's did give me nightmares as a child...)
March 18, 2025 at 10:10 PM
Aftersun is one of the last 10 years' bona fide masterpieces, absolutely astonishing work that leaves me quietly desperate for Charlotte Wells next venture. I suspect it will be Mark's pick too.

Simon Russell Beale is, for me, perhaps one of the greatest actors of his generation, and underutilised as a screen actor compared to the stage - his performance as Beria in The Death of Stalin is one my all time favourite comedy roles. And obviously also a good opportunity to say hello to Jason...

I have shamefully only seen Topsy Turvy (which was fantastic) but will be seeing Hard Truths next week and will perhaps settle down to watch some of the other suggestions too.
January 27, 2025 at 10:45 PM
Watching The Shape of Water in 2018 (along with Three Billboards shortly after) was the main event that got me into film properly and resulted in my discovering of your good selves, so I shall go with that
January 15, 2025 at 10:20 AM
For someone like me who had no great knowledge or investment in Gilbert and Sullivan, I was slightly surprised that I really enjoyed Mike Leigh's Topsy-Turvey. And as a Claude Rains obsessive, may I also suggest his version of Phantom, relatively unknown in comparison to other versions!

• Perfect Days
• The Outrun
• Made in England: The Films of Powell and Pressburger

Honourable mention to first time watches of A Matter of Life and Death, The Red Shoes, Blimp and Black Narcissus after watching Made in England, what an absolute treat.
