I downloaded Whatnot after being cajoled by the promise of $15 to spend on Magic: The Gathering cards from YouTube advertisements, and have been watching a fair bit of it since. Magic isn’t particularly well represented on the app - it’s dwarfed by the juggernaut of Pokemon cards. After watching a lot of card streamers I’ve come to the conclusion that this veers extremely close to being a gambling app, and one that is at least partially targeted at kids. Superficially, Whatnot lives up to its promise of being “if Twitch and eBay had a baby.” Streamers throw up an item and start a countdown, viewers swipe to bid and the top bidder takes it home.
