'The South Downs. Paths of the Dead' (Broken Sleep Books)

Queer. Story. Landscape. Magic.
Pinned
For those I am meeting here for the first time, "The South Downs: Paths of the Dead" is my spirit-haunted prose-poem of my walk of the South Downs Way.

If you are interested in magic, spirit work, poetry, walking, landscape or just the generally weird, you might like it...

Visited this ruined and overgrown parish church on Anglesey as the light was fading and, this does not happen very often, absolutely did not like the atmosphere. Could not wait to get out and away.

Meeting ancient trees is always amazing, this yew though in Llangernyw in North Wales is thought to be 4,000, perhaps 5,000 yrs old!

It is older than Christianity and Stonehenge. 0ne of the oldest living beings on the planet.

The extraordinary Barclodiad y Gawres, a 4,500 yr old neolithic chamber on the cliffs above the Irish Sea. Very atmospheric. The chamber is unusual for containing spirals, circles and other shapes chiselled into the stones, part visible in last photo.

Holiday reading: "North" by Gyrus. An ambitious attempt to lay a narrative onto the development of human consciousness from our earliest prehistory. Dense and intense but one of those books which, even when you disagree with it, is giving you new avenues of thought on every page.

Walked out to Eglwys Cwyfan (St Kevin's Church) off the shore of Anglesey today. It dates from 12th century and was nearly lost to coastal erosion: it used to be joined to the land. Now only accesible once the tide is out a certain way.

Drove half-way up a mountain today to a bookshop in an old slate mine where an elderly deaf man shouted at me about the evils of the modern world for ten minutes before I could leave with my haul, after making me pay by bank transfer from my phone!

The long walk to Ynys Llandwyn where St Dwynwen (the Welsh St Valentine) set up a hermitage and where Wales's richest pilgrimage centre flourished for hundreds of years.

Found a sinister copy of Golidlocks and the Three Bears today in a junk shop. Some child blacked out her eyes throughout!

Bryn Celli Ddu this morning. A 4,000 year old neolithic chamber which began as a henge 1,000 years before that. This chamber aligned perfectly on the dawn moment of the midsummer sun. The whole was reconstructed after its excavation in the early 20th century.

When you can look up from your meditations on the shoreline of a heavily militarized modern harbour and see a nearly complete Roman fort over the waves with a modern firing range behind you and the howls of Napoleonic POWs on the wind.
