Thank you, Philly Tax Prep for Artists, for reporting on this change that now taxes individuals for funds received via Venmo, PayPal and CashApp. For example, if a housemate collects rent from fellow roommates who then pays their landlord, this housemate may be taxed.

1099-K Changes (Tax Form for Third Party money coming in from Venmo, PayPal and CashApp) Previously, Venmo, PayPal, CashApp transactions were treated like cash. Unless you had a business account, transactions were not tracked. Now, you will receive a tax form if you receive funds over a certain threshold: More than $5,000 in 2024; more than $2,500 in 2025; and more than $600 in the calendar year 2026 and after.
