Oversight was mine. The people of DC rose up and said no to a highway that'd destroy their home.

DC is as good as it is due to this grass roots organization. It is too easy to accept powerlessness, and this proves the opposite.

I was shocked both at the difficulty of explaining that safety is as important - I'd say more - than convenience, and that my interlocutors found it so hard to understand a different position

Both are mathy social scientists who spoke to using evidence to verify propositions.

But not about cars.

Cause of death for children: pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC...

Correction: While cars were the number one cause of death in children 2000 to 2019, in 2020 it became gun death. This is both due to decreasing deaths of children from collisions and increasing death from cars.

Collisions per mile: www.consumershield.com/articles/sel...

This is what I can find right now, and is collisions not fatalities and only goes thru 2021.

Amsterdam in the 70s was a car paradise:

Interlocutor #2, about the war on cars folks: They clearly do not have children.

Me: They do. They invented the bike bus. And the kids petitioned the city for bike corrals to replace parking

Me, as an aside to #2: I do like smart people who disagree with me.
#2: We don't disagree, we just don't understand your argument.
Me: What do you think the number one cause of death among children is?
#2: No.
Me: Yes.
#2: No way. It can't be.
November 23, 2025 at 4:26 PM
Interlocutor #2: What you are calling for would take 150 years!

Me: Amsterdam did it in 30. In the 70s, American-developers tried to pave over the canals and build highways. The people revolted. The US has had numerous anti-highway campaigns, including DC.

Interlocutor #1: Self-driving cars and buses and the answer!
Me: Self-driving cars kill people at a higher rate than cars.

Interlocutor #1 & #2: That's can't be true, Tesla and Waymo say otherwise.

Me: They turn off the self-driving feature a second before a collision and blame the driver.
November 23, 2025 at 4:26 PM
Me: The position of the book Life After Cars is: cars were a mistake. Cars kill people, destroy wildlife, and make cities unpleasant. Bikes and walking and buses are better.

Interlocutor #1: But what if I want variety and convenience, not just what's nearest me?
Me: Bikes. Buses.

I love every single part of this thread.

We have friends deliver for us.

This for-sure isn't a systemic solution. One idea for that: Once/yearly pickup in neighborhoods and metro.

Like maybe Braddock Metro pickup is Spring, King is Summer, Potomac Yard is Fall. Whatever.

Is that at all tenable?

Oh no an elected official is here.

honestly: I loved Arlington for a decade. We moved as Alx has town houses and Arlington... basically doesn't

As soon as Missing Middle got mostly nixed, we stopped waiting and moved next door

Our house is legal non-confirming. Can't build 'em like this anymore!

Lolol we left post 2020. Spent the pandemic in an apartment overlooking Courthouse metro. Moved to Arlington maybe 2010? Time is an illusion.

My favorite event was the Clarendon Day 5k, may it be remembered.

what was yours?

They voted - without notice! - that drivers convenience is more important than life and limb of citizens. That's divisive. You just stated facts.
November 21, 2025 at 2:39 PM
I asked the next step in fixing this. We're seeing it.

ALX - free buses, reduced single-family exclusionary zoning, reduced parking minimum
NYC - freeze the rent, free buses

Obvious next steps:
- Freeway removal
- parking conversion
- Office conversion

That's all obvious. What am I not seeing?

Checking in from across Monroe. Guessing this is only for Rosemonters, yeah?
November 19, 2025 at 6:44 PM
Yes.
November 13, 2025 at 1:52 PM
Yes!

Ibuprofen solves a large quantity of my ills.

Neck twinge? Two ibuprofen
Headache? two ibuprofen
Hangover? two ibuprofen
Allergies? 2 ibuprofen and a sudafed

The idea that ibuprofen isn't a cornerstone to health for so many is ridiculous.

My understanding is they also provide dog treats.
November 11, 2025 at 8:53 PM
Wait wait I also hate insurance companies, and want a single payer system for health care.

Am I now an R?
