I wrote about whether or not the Squid Game finale sticks the landing.

The answer? Yeah it kinda does, but in a much more meta way than you'd think.

Now, Black kpop fans and allies to Black kpop fans are WHACKING these Aespa stans in the replies by listing the incredibly long history of Afrofuturism/cyber in the visuals of Black popular music, from TLC to Aaliyah and, of course, Missy Elliot. (and yes, "from a Black" *is* crazy, your honor.)

When another fan pointed out that, actually, tons of Aespa's concepts come from Black culture, making Katseye more entitled to them because of Manon...mayhem ensued. Of the racist variety, of course, but also of the regular stan war variety.

Aespa is known for their edgier sound and their cosmic/supernatural/cyber/futuristic aesthetics. So, when Katseye previewed the teaser for their upcoming long-awaited comeback single, Gnarly, some Aespa fans noticed some thematic similarities.

It's come to my attention that there's not really a large #Kpop contingent on here, so let me try my best: There is currently a massive debate erupting on Twitter/X about Black cultural appropriation with one of the genre's largest girl groups: Aespa

also, shout out to our art team for choosing the most cinnamon-roll-esque photo of Kendrick, who, in the photos, actually swept his grammy noms for being one of the most vicious haters the industry has ever seen

nowadays, this is what happens when shows get renewed for multiple more seasons earlier on or at the same time. they become Season 2 part 1 and Season 2 part 2 instead of contained narratives that build on each other with *some* continuous threads.

seasons used to mean something!

the most disheartening part of the Lizzo news, beyond the allegations themselves, is seeing people use it as an opportunity to express their fatphobia. the burden of representation makes it so that only a few can be the voices for a community, but if they fall, we all fall.

there is a reason they were It Girls in school settings dressed in the hottest of Y2K fashions whose main “purpose” was seeking out identity and socialization

as opposed to…wanting a “dream job,” they wanted fun, clothes, friends, and individuality

anyway, shout out to my Sashas — I see y’all!
