I also highly suggest making a test swatch that ends up 10cm x 10cm, so you can estimate the stitches required for the size you want. No one has the same tension, this will help in future projects when using someone else's design.

I use a 3mm on mine, so the 3.5mm would work. Just have slightly bigger gaps between stitches. I'd use DBL (US = SC) technique, then when you reach the size you want, do the same stitch around the work as a border.

Honestly, washcloths. No blocking required and you end up with something useful. Doesn't need to look too pretty either. You'll need cotton yarn, choose whatever colour keeps you motivated. Then once you feel braver, try adding stripes in a different colour to your cloths.
