@inaturalist.bsky.social identifies the ants as winter ants, genus Prenolepus (likely P. imparis). Apparently, these ants live underground and actually go dormant during the summer!

Deer exclosures do work, but they aren't feasible on a large scale, not least because they prevent movement of the large critters through our remaining forests. As far as eating meat goes, I think hunting a wild deer is far more ethical than eating farmed meat. And at least where I live, it helps! 🌱

If only there were a way to do no harm! Sadly, because our ancestors eliminated the natural predators of white-tailed deer here, we have an overpopulation situation that impacts the whole ecosystem—starting with preventing young trees and sensitive plants from reaching maturity. 🥲
