"Before woke"??? So, over a hundred years ago, when that word was coined as African American slang to be watchful of racism and social injustice?

Or just before you people started using it as a stand-in for the n-word you wish you could still say in public without consequence?

- if payment processors' current policies had always existed, huge swaths of culture, from the prestigious to the pulpy, simply wouldn't exist. Today's disturbing indie work might be tomorrow's essential text. And even if it isn't, the freedom to create and access challenging content is valuable.

To be clear, works shouldn't need to meet some arbitrary standard of 'literary merit' or follow specific aesthetic conventions to exist. Genre fiction, pulp novels, underground comics, indie games, and yes, even erotica ought to have the right to explore upsetting themes. But note that -

So, first up, obvious disclaimer that porn is fine and these policies are bad solely on that basis. But for your consideration, here is a list of classic, well-respected artistic works that would be banned on Itch per these policies:

This is escaping containment. 🫡 Make your calls today, be polite yet firm. I had luck approaching it as a concerned customer.

He tried to hit me with the "Well if the platform's primary service is for explicit material then it would be blocked."

So I asked why Steam, itch and Patreon were targeted when that's not their primary service.

Amazingly, a more productive call than visa

Oh my god the PayPal call was SO FUNNY. The guy on the phone was like "We don't allow processing payments for explicit material."

So I hit him with "So if I were to go and purchase a copy of Game of Thrones online, my payment would be blocked?"

I think it clicked for him then.

I took the "confused and asking questions" route on the phone with Visa today and in my initial questions, I didn't mention video games at all and the person on the phone said "Visa doesn't block payments to video game sites" so I KNOW they're floundering under these calls.

Right wingers figured out decades ago that they could dress up their bullshit with vaguely lefty-sounding language and people would buy into it. As far back as the moral panics of the 2000s they were pulling this shit! They said the same things about Rapelay at the time

"protecting women" has become a dogwhistle among the right wing in order to attack everything from porn to trans rights. it is co-opting left wing messaging for reactionary intent. it genuinely just a variation of "think of the children"
