How droll - posting this short piece to Facebook, something about it prompts the site to try create an event to boost its reach.

A market for everything, I suppose.

In the interim, this piece was also cited by the International Centre for Counter-Terrorism - a mild shock at first, followed by relief when it was for a good reason...

God, the typos - not only does autocorrect not seem to function here, but also goes to show why quick short form posts are not my forte, as opposed to an actual written and at least partially edited piece.

Do not give them ground.

Dutton's politicised rejection of reality and adoption of Trumpian style rhetoric is not to be taken lightly, and must be strongly opposed.

Attacks on universities is just one battleground. Now more than ever we need critical and informed voices to push for progress, not fall to obedience.

Global warming has already surpassed the 1.5C and, given runaway methane emissions from permafrost and glacial melts combined with the sheer lack of action by major polluters in both state and capital spheres, to brush environmentalism off as "woke" is not only dangerous, they are fucking complicit.

The rights of women need to not only be fought for, but defended against those who would tear them down. Queer people exist, and the denial of this is a rejection of their humanity in the face of scientific and anthropological evidence.

Looking beyond basic human decency, Dutton and his ilk perhaps look at feminist/queer theory or environnmental politics as being "woke" as well. But in doing so, they are not attacking the ideas directly, they are politicising the mere existence of those topics and the realities that inform them.

The closest to a "woke" subject I did was Social Justice Journalism. It's radical and strange premise was that if you are going to write on topics like queer issues, First Nations, victims of crimes like SA, etc., then you should do so respectfully and actually talk to people in those communities.
