lol I feel kinda bad for the level of snark in that thread, I sometimes forget that other people do not think about this stuff 8 hours a day like I do and it’s totally reasonable to be skeptical of campaigns like that

so by all means feel free to not donate to cashier roundup campaigns but for the love of god stop acting like it makes you a hero, and stop spreading misinformation. when you say this stuff you are actively causing worthy organizations to raise less money

stores cannot legally collect money from people to reimburse themselves for a donation they’ve already made. not saying it’s never happened, but it’s not the norm. I get it, you heard someone say that one time and it made you feel good about not donating. Well it’s not true

people may be confusing this with “matching gifts” which often ARE done that way. if a nonprofit says “your gift will be doubled up to $5k” that usually means $5k has already been donated and doesn’t depend on your gift. that’s an entirely different scenario

there’s a common misconception that “the donation has already been made, the company just wants you to reimburse them”. this is false. when I’ve participated in these campaigns, we get a check for the total amount raised after the campaign ends

I work in fundraising and have done a number of campaigns like this. the money donated actually goes to the cause, so don’t pretend your refusal to donate is some sort of anti-corporate activism

hearing that it's similar to way of water is the best news I could've heard today

I remember doing a Christmas word search in 3rd grade Sunday school and one of the words was virgin. this kid pointed at it and snickered and got in trouble. like ma’am, what were you expecting
