Just a professor of medieval literature -- the one you hope you do get -- and scholar of popular culture who obsessively fangirls over Hawkeye, Cap, Bucky, Dean Winchester, Eliot Spencer, and Aragorn, son of Arathorn. I have a type.
State departments of education deciding secondary education English majors don't need to take literature classes but lots of assessment classes is a symptom of the same problem. How do you teach Senior English if you've never read Shakespeare or Chaucer or Toni Morrison?

I don't know what level you're working with, but Helen Vendler wrote some lovely reviews and analyses during her life. There are number of collections of her essays out there. This one from the Yale Review is about "The Waste Land." yalereview.org/article/vend...
Helen Vendler: "'The Waste Land' Revisited"
We know that The Waste Land is canonical because it has received the homage of parody.
