I thought the doc was great. Obviously very sad but a lovely portrait and interesting dynamics between Reuben’s and the filmmaker.

It's not all fun, games, and secret words (ahhhhhh!!!) though. In the book I read the playhouse as an otherwise space indelibly refracted through Paul Reubens' queer and AIDS-phobic 1991 arrest in an adult movie theatre.

This is a book I've always wanted to write because I think Pee-wee Herman still matters deeply to queer folks, as an icon, a site of identification, a source of wild play and joy, and an architect of the playhouse of my (our) collective dreaming.
