I worked at a well-meaning school that provided a bonus for perfect attendance. One year, a teacher's mother suddenly became very ill and then passed away. This teacher missed two weeks of school and as a result was not eligible for the bonus. They didn't continue the program after that. 4/4

I understand the sentiment behind suggestions in this article to build awareness around teacher absenteeism rates and offer incentives... but ultimately those are condescending and likely counterproductive strategies. 3/4

Additionally, the majority of teachers are women who are counted on in society to take care of sick children, parents, etc.. 2/4
