I MEAN
I thought about how hurtful this teaching is to so many women in the family of God. Single women who dream of marriage and motherhood but aren’t sure that dream will ever become a reality. Or married women who long to be mothers but struggle with infertility. Or women who simply don’t feel called to have children. How invisible they must have all felt in a church culture telling them that marriage was what every woman was destined for, and that children were a mandatory byproduct of marriage. I felt a wave of compassion for all the women who had been exposed to this toxic teaching and were left wondering if they were less loved by God, or who were questioned and challenged over the years about being single or childless or working outside the home. This hardly sounds “biblical.”

I'm working on revisions for @vickicourtney.bsky.social's new book, and this part takes my breath away every time. What a gift to have a woman of my mom's generation saying this stuff to young moms like me.

I plucked a well-worn Christian parenting book off my bookshelf one afternoon and, out of curiosity, began scanning the introduction. It didn’t take long before my eyes landed on a familiar phrase common in many Christian parenting books from my young motherhood days. This particular book referenced motherhood as “a high calling” and went on to further declare it “perhaps the highest calling God can give a woman.” I grumbled under my breath, triggered at the false, impossibly heavy expectation that had been placed on mothers of my generation. Sadly, the book I picked up was a book I had written years ago! I was part of the problem. At the time, I had sincerely believed that motherhood was a woman’s highest calling, echoing what I had been taught over the years under the guise of biblical womanhood. Biblical womanhood had become a catch-all term of directives and expectations—many of which were nowhere to be found in Scripture—that determined whether a Christian woman was sufficiently living up to who she was meant to be. Culture at large reinforced the expectation that a woman was incomplete without marriage and children. As a result, many Christian books and Bible studies reinforced this idea that marriage and motherhood were core to a woman’s identity.

My husband surprised me with a last-minute overnight getaway, so we are doing our favorite things—namely, picking out new books at the local bookstore and spending the morning reading.

It took almost 15 years after leaving my abusive church to realize one Sunday that I felt delight, not wariness. A long, slow process of learning what safe church looks like, then easing back into relationship w people I can trust. This year, half the people at my bday party were church friends. 😭

We’re doing Elf on the Shelf for the first time, except letting the kids create the scenes each night. My 9-year-old disappeared to his room and came back with a Lego couch and TV for Jeff (inexplicably the name they chose).
