This was such a great panel organised by Estella Chen @ox.ac.uk & one of great joys of #nacbs2025 is having opportunity to jump out of your own subject area & century (for me to travel back to early modern England) & learn new & fascinating things.

Samuel Johnson ‘predicts a riot’. Great paper by Richard Gorrie at #nacbs2025 panel on publicity, authority & spectacles of justice & disorder. His paper looked at theatre riots in 18th Century London. Great stuff.

Fantastic paper & robust challenge to chivalry theory in criminal justice by Gillian Gluck Smith of @stanford.edu here at #nacbs2025. Clear demonstration that women accused of being petty traitors in early modern England were more harshly punished with pain & suffering inflicted on female bodies. 👏

Wonderful evening spent with members of #IrishLabourHistorySociety celebrating 50th edition of #Saothar. Lovely reflections on its significant contribution to Irish history landscape & call to arms to make labour histories more known to future generations & way to promote social justice.
