The main benefits of a tunnel here are that it would be easier, quicker, and lower stress than any on-street option. Between points A and B a tunnel cuts 0.63 miles and 50 feet of elevation from the trip. What now takes 9 minutes with 5 traffic lights becomes 3 minutes with no lights!

Not yet but the swing bridge trusses are being assembled right now. This photo is from a couple days ago and they’ve done a lot more since. Supposedly it’s all going to be open at the end of the year but there is still a lot of other work to do like decking and railings

I’m told by a person who actually knows things that the Mill Creek outlet is exactly where that tunnel is drawn. I know this is a complication which could only be easily solved by a shadow government of Dutch engineers but I’m choosing to look at it as a precedent for tunneling under the NEC there.

A tunnel and new trail section would be an off-street alternative to sections 1-5 of the West Bank Greenway plans from 2012

If we ever get serious funding for bike and pedestrian infrastructure a tunnel under the rail tracks at 42nd street in West Philly would be nice. A 250 foot tunnel could connect the Clark Park area of West Philly to the Schuylkill River Trail with just 1/4 mile of new path.

The FOPS here in Philly will say anything to continue parking in a bike lane. It doesn’t need to make sense or even be truthful

Don Norman wrote a nice book about such issues. It should be mandatory reading for people who design or select things which the public is expected to use.

I just finished a thorough servicing of our 20 year old espresso machine, which took many hours - several of which were just making a tiny copper crush washer which could not be bought.

When all that was done I realized that I had a newfound appreciation for the simplicity of french press coffee.

After reading this and understanding that traffic congestion in Manhattan has been an unsolved problem for over 70 years it now seems absurd that congestion pricing went into effect only 2 days ago.

I don't know how we get drunk drivers off the streets but I do know that putting up bollards to protect pedestrians would be simple and effective. Use of break-away signal poles (designed to protect the occupants of a car) where so many people walk is engineering negligence

Things are going to get so bad for SEPTA riders and the entire Philadelphia region if this doesn’t get resolved. People will lose their jobs, traffic is going to get worse, and air quality will take a dive. This is a death spiral.

This is an email I received from SEPTA an hour ago
