Every job has its downsides. The biggest of Takuto’s is dealing with difficult passengers: the particular ones who love to criticize every time he makes a turn they don’t approve of; the angry ones who've had a bad day and take their frustration out on their driver; the drunk ones who need assistance to get in and out of the car and vomit on the backseat. Weirdly enough, he doesn’t mind. When Takuto was still a counselor, he couldn't abandon his worst patients even if they screamed and cursed at him in his own office. He had the responsibility to help them, and it was up to him to find out how. The most important thing was to remember it was never personal: their wounds had formed long before they met him, and sometimes he was the only safe outlet they had. It didn't make him feel any better. Takuto carried their blood and tears home with him every night, like a wartime medic whose clothes were never truly clean. Now, though, being a driver offers him more of an out. It can be tiring to cater to people, but they're only his passengers for a few hours of his day. No matter how bad things get, he can always throw them out of the car and let them find their own way. On the extremely rare occasions he's forced to do so, the guilt eats at him, but never for long. He would go home and wash his clothes, and they would stay clean until the next time he wears them. That is not to say he no longer resents his own helplessness. Some days, he feels like all he does is break his own heart over someone else’s life story. Some days, the stains from their wounds refuse to leave him, stubborn and vicious. But he keeps going, and going, and going, and then he wakes up and his clothes are pristine again. Tokyo is a big city. Japan is a big country. It is almost unthinkable for the same clients to get into his taxi more than once or twice in his lifetime. They would come to him, let him shoulder their burdens for a little while, and then he would let them go, wishing them the best.
